European alternatives to Zoho Invoice
Zoho Invoice is free and genuinely capable — which makes it hard to leave until you hit the thing that matters to you: where your data lives, who owns the company, or just that you never needed half those features in the first place.
Zoho Corp is an Indian company with a US headquarters. Their EU data residency option exists, but it's opt-in during account setup and not the default — most users don't realise their invoice data has been sitting on servers outside Europe until it becomes a compliance question. For Swedish and EU SMEs processing personal data of EU customers, that's not a theoretical concern. GDPR requires knowing exactly where data is processed and being able to demonstrate it. "We think we selected the EU region" isn't an answer your auditor will accept.
The second reason people leave is scope creep — Zoho's. Zoho Invoice is free because it feeds you into the Zoho ecosystem: CRM, Books, Analytics, Projects. That's fine if you want all of it, but if you just need to send invoices and get paid, you end up maintaining credentials and permissions across a platform you never asked for. The free tier also caps users and recurring invoices, so growing firms hit a wall and face a choice: pay for Zoho Books (a full accounting suite) or leave.
The third group leaving Zoho Invoice is simpler: they wanted something built for their country. Zoho is built for everywhere, which means it's optimised for nowhere in particular. VAT rules, local e-invoice formats, bank reconciliation with Nordic banks, Peppol network access — these work in Zoho, but they require configuration that a tool built for your market handles automatically.

Our honest take
If you're leaving over data residency, Moneybird (Netherlands), Pennylane (France), sevDesk (Germany), Fortnox (Sweden), and Faktura (Sweden) all default to EU hosting with no opt-in required — GDPR compliance is built into the product rather than a setting you might have missed. Zervant (Finland) is the closest free-tier match to Zoho Invoice's pricing for sole traders: up to five invoices a month at no cost, localized for Nordic countries.
If you want the Zoho breadth — CRM, HR, projects, accounting in one place — but EU-native, Holded (Spain) is the honest answer. It covers invoicing, accounting, CRM, HR, inventory, and projects in one platform and sets up in under ten minutes. It's not free, but it's built as an integrated suite rather than a gateway drug to upsell.
For German-speaking markets, sevDesk and FastBill both handle ZUGFeRD/XRechnung e-invoicing and ELSTER VAT filing natively — things Zoho requires manual setup or workarounds for. For Dutch businesses, Moneybird's iDEAL and SEPA payment integration is a genuine time-saver Zoho doesn't match. For Danish and Nordic businesses, e-conomic and Dinero connect directly to local tax authorities and bank feeds.
Faktura is worth considering if you're a Swedish SME who found Zoho's feature list overwhelming and just wants to send invoices compliantly, in Swedish, from an EU-hosted tool. It's not trying to be a full accounting suite. Where it loses to Zoho: Zoho Invoice has a free tier (Faktura is paid), more integrations, better recurring billing automation, and a mobile app with more capability. If you were using Zoho's automation features heavily, Faktura won't replace all of that. But if you used ten percent of Zoho's features and spent the rest of your time ignoring the others, that's the tradeoff — simpler tool, clearer data residency, Swedish support.
