European alternatives to Wave
Wave was free for a long time, which made it the default for bootstrapped Canadian and American founders. But "free cloud accounting" from a Toronto SaaS company stops being an advantage when you're in the EU and GDPR compliance, EU data residency, and local tax laws matter.
Wave's pitch was always straightforward: free invoicing and bookkeeping, no credit card required, good enough for solopreneurs. The product works fine for simple invoicing and basic expense tracking. Problem is, if you're an EU business, Wave's privacy policy reads like an afterthought. Data goes to Canadian servers. Support is asynchronous and slow. Tax compliance? Wave's "UK VAT" module is basic, and if you're anywhere else in the EU—Germany, France, Benelux, Spain, Nordics—you're patching the gaps yourself or moving to software that speaks your tax rules natively.

Our honest take
If you're a Dutch freelancer, Moneybird or e-Boekhouden beat Wave (VAT filing works, bank feeds are reliable). German solopreneurs should look at Papierkram or Norman for actual German tax automation, not winging it. French independents get better E-invoicing roadmap from Pennylane or Tiime. Spanish SMBs in growth mode? Holded does all-in-one (invoicing, CRM, payroll, inventory) where Wave does invoicing and stops. Danish and Nordic teams are better served by Visma e-conomic, Billy, or Reviso—all built by founders who know Danish law.
Where Bokföring actually beats Wave: we are Swedish, EU-hosted, GDPR-native, and aligned with Swedish tax rules (SRU, Försäljningsstatistik). We're not trying to be a global platform. Where Bokföring loses: we don't have Wave's free tier (Bokföring starts at a real price), and we're not suited for non-Swedish businesses. But if you're Swedish and considering Wave, you're paying (in time and compliance risk) for something a Swedish tool handles with one less integration. Wave's free run in North America doesn't translate to the EU—the regulatory gravity is different, and Wave's response has been to stay thin and asynchronous. That's fine for hobby invoicing. Not fine for a business trying to sleep at night.
