European alternatives to Braintree

Braintree was a developer favourite for flexible payment processing — then PayPal acquired it, and a slow drift has set in: deprecated SDKs, slower support, and an EU data story that still runs through American infrastructure.

The practical frustration is that Braintree is a payment gateway, full stop. It handles card authorisation, vaulted payment methods, and fraud tools well, but it gives you no billing layer. If you want subscriptions, recurring logic, dunning, or invoicing, you build it yourself on top of the API. That was an acceptable trade-off when the developer experience was exceptional. Now that the Drop-in SDK was deprecated in July 2025 (processing cut-off: July 2026) and support reviews consistently describe slow, unresponsive responses, teams are weighing whether the raw flexibility is worth the maintenance overhead.

For EU companies, the ownership question is harder to ignore than it was five years ago. Braintree is a PayPal subsidiary, incorporated in the US. Even with contractual data transfer protections, transaction data ultimately flows through PayPal's global infrastructure. In sectors where a regulator, a procurement team, or a DPA is asking pointed questions about data residency and third-country transfers, "we have a Data Processing Agreement" is no longer enough of an answer on its own. EU-owned and EU-headquartered alternatives have become a genuine procurement requirement in more and more RFPs.

The third push factor is pricing opacity at volume. Braintree's per-transaction model looks simple at the start, but as volume grows the conversation shifts to custom rates negotiated with PayPal's enterprise team — a process that smaller European companies find opaque and slow. GoCardless and Mollie, by contrast, are straightforward on price from day one.

Our honest take

If you're leaving Braintree because you need a pure payments layer that's EU-owned and transparent on pricing, Mollie (NL) is the most direct replacement — EU data on Dutch servers, no setup or minimum fees, pay-per-transaction, and support for online, in-person, and subscription payments. GoCardless (GB) is worth considering if your revenue is largely recurring and you want to cut card fees by moving to bank-to-bank SEPA direct debit. Twikey (BE) is the specialist if cross-border mandates and SEPA B2B are central to your model.

If you're leaving because you also need billing logic you're tired of building yourself, you're solving a bigger problem than a gateway swap. Fenerum, Hyperline, Frisbii, or Younium give you payments plus subscription management as an integrated product. Lago and Meteroid give you open-source control over the whole stack. For platforms or B2B SaaS that need embedded invoicing and AP automation, Monite (DE) is purpose-built for that.

PayPro is relevant if you're a Swedish or Nordic SME that wants EU-hosted payment collection combined with economic and financial analysis — that's its genuine home ground. It doesn't try to replicate Braintree's raw gateway flexibility or its global payment rail coverage, and it's not the right fit if you process in many currencies or need the kind of developer-first API that drew you to Braintree in the first place. But if Braintree always felt like more infrastructure than you needed and you want a simpler, EU-native tool that keeps payments and financial insight together, PayPro is worth evaluating alongside Mollie.
