European alternatives to Workday
Workday is powerful, expensive, and built for enterprises with dedicated HR ops teams — if you're an EU company questioning whether you're paying for 90% of a platform you'll never touch, you're not alone.
The most common reason EU companies start looking away from Workday isn't the software itself — it's the contract. Six-figure annual fees, multi-year lock-in, and an implementation that takes months before anyone logs in. For companies under a few thousand employees, it's a lot of machine for the job.
Data residency is the second pressure point. Workday does offer EU data centres, but it's a US-headquartered company subject to US law, and that creates real headaches for GDPR-conscious legal and procurement teams. EU-owned alternatives hosted entirely in Europe sidestep those conversations entirely.
The third is complexity. Workday's strength — its depth across payroll, finance, talent, planning — becomes a liability when your HR team is three people trying to run a straightforward employee lifecycle. You're not missing features; you're drowning in configuration.

Our honest take
If you need the breadth of what Workday does — global payroll, finance consolidation, workforce planning at enterprise scale — then a like-for-like EU replacement doesn't really exist in a single product. The closest full-suite EU options are SD Worx for pan-European payroll compliance across 30 markets, Personio for mid-market companies that want a proper HRIS without the enterprise price tag, or AFAS for organizations that also need ERP and finance in one system. Sympa and CatalystOne are worth a look for Nordic-headquartered companies specifically.
HR Offboarding does one thing Workday also does, but much more narrowly: employee offboarding workflows. If your only frustration with Workday is that offboarding still feels manual or inconsistently handled across managers, HR Offboarding is a focused EU-hosted fix for exactly that. It won't replace your HRIS and it's not trying to. But if you're an EU SME that never needed Workday's scale in the first place and you're exiting it, you'll want a proper suite replacement — Personio or Factorial — rather than adding another point tool.
